The Intel 4004 was an integrated circuit model[1]. Released in November 1971, it marked the introduction of the first commercially available microprocessor. Designed by Federico Faggin, Ted Hoff, and Stanley Mazor at Intel, the 4004 contained 2,300 transistors. It operated at a clock speed of 740 kHz and could execute approximately 92,000 instructions per second.
Manufactured using a 10-micron process, the Intel 4004 had a die size of 12 mm². It supported a 4-bit data bus and addressed up to 640 bytes of memory. The chip was originally developed for Busicom, a Japanese calculator manufacturer, under the codename "MCS-4".
The Intel 4004 required a +5V power supply and consumed around 0.5 watts of power. Its instruction set consisted of 46 instructions, enabling basic arithmetic and logic operations. The microprocessor was packaged in a 16-pin dual in-line package (DIP).
